Police Chief Stresses Protecting Security, Tackling Illicit Drugs
He said every member of the Iranian society has to pay attention to the indispensable measures to safeguard and contribute to the social security.
Speaking in a meeting attended by the commanders of anti-drug units around the country, Qalibaf said the risk coming from the social indescipline is not less than the risk of a possible invasion by enemies at the borders.
He commented on the cultural onslaught by enemies against Iran and said organized activities have been launched in various parts of the country to deal blows at the ruling system in Iran, IRNA reported.
A public awareness campaign should be launched by officials to promote the knowledge of the people on the negative consequences and danger arising from the enemies' cultural raid against Islamic system of Iran, he noted.
He pointed out that more than 90 percent of the people wish to live in a sound social atmosphere and the police personnel are duty-bound to create a healthy social atmosphere.
He said the police would take any necessary action in countering all manifestations of immorality and corruption in the society.
He praised the police personnel who have been cracking down on the cases of the corruption and social disorder and stepped up efforts to promote the security for the benefit of citizens.
The police good performance made it possible for the individuals and families to come to social activities in an atmosphere dominated by comfort, confidence and encouragement, he noted.
Guaranteeing the security by countering the problems made by offenders is first and foremost obligation of the police forces, he added.
Qalibaf further commented on the drug problem in Iran and said the illicit drug abuse was "a thorny problem" which requires effective strategies to be solved.
The time is ripe to take practical steps in tacking drug issue, said the police chief and added that practical measures are needed by all the police units to effectively counter the drug problem.
The officials have to consider the realities and initiate expert programs and plans to solve the dilemma, he said, while adding that the speculations should be translated into action.
People are also encouraged to get involved in the fight against the illicit drug trafficking in a successful strategy.
Iran has over two million addicts that constitutes 1.2 percent to 2 percent of the total population. This is due to the country's location in the neighborhood of the drug producing states, in particular, Afghanistan.
According to the press reports out of 2 million drug abusers 800,000 abuse narcotic drugs occasionally. Most of the drug addicts consume opium but the consumption of heroin, in particular, by injection, is on the rise.
Iran sits on the crossroads of the international drug trade which originates from sources in Afghanistan and Pakistan to markets in Central Asia, Europe and Persian Gulf littoral states.
